HISTORY

Pillar completed 4th July 1950 costing £52.5s.4d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NS83/46 within the Lanark secondary block, and levelled to second class precision during 1950. This pillar station was last maintained by the Ordnance Survey in October 1976.

 

SITE VISIT

Accessed from Afton Resr via tracks and forest breaks. This pillar is in a sorry state like many NS83 pillars. Earlier repairs are cracking and much of the top surface is away. Still structurally sound. Spider centre open. The flush bracket is on the NNW face of the pillar. Front sighting hole open. Long views to the east and south include Broad Law, Hart Fell, Cold Fell, Skiddaw, Binsey, Criffel, Helvellyn, Sca Fell and Pillar. SW dominated by Cairnsmore Of Deugh.
