S5393 - Cairn William

HISTORY

Pillar completed 5th May 1949 costing £14.8s.0d. Computed as secondary triangulation station NO89/8 within the Aberdeen secondary block and levelled to second class precision during 1950. This station was also used during the reconnaissance of secondary block NJ40 (Ballater) during 1956. Routine maintenance by the Ordnance Survey was last undertaken in May 1989. This marker was later visited by the OS on 26th February 1995.

 

SITE VISIT

Approached from the west. A brisk walk on foot from Strone Hill. Located on a bare summit with heather clad slopes, the trig pillar is in good condition. The spider centre retains stamped font OS cap. Flush bracket S5393 is on the west face of the pillar. There are rewarding distant views in all directions. Descended to the east and continued on foot to Cot Town.
