S2686 - Craigshill (site of)

NT053684, LR65.

HISTORY

Pillar completed 31st August 1939. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NT18/T16 during 1947. Levelled to height to first class precision in November 1956. The pillar was destroyed in May 1970.

SITE VISIT

Would have stood at NT 05320 68465. GPS reading indicates that a block of flats occupy trig site. Depressing area where the only local amenity is a post mounted bin for dog poo. The grass verges and gardens are strewn with litter, street furniture is defaced, stray dogs run loose and the ice cream vans chime unrecognizable tunes obviously composed by somebody without an ear for music. Older maps show that this trig stood on the east side of a road just south of crossroads. These roads are now footpaths. Main photo from south. INFO from OS: FB No. was S2686. Pillar destroyed 05/70 (LVP@OS).
