The first princely house of Targoviste, surrounded by a stone wall with towers, dates from the reign of Mircea cel Batran, around 1400. Important extension works were probably carried out until 1440 during the time of Prince Vlad Dracul who added the Chindia tower and built a new palace on one side of the surrounding wall, rectangular in shape, with walls about 2m thick. Around 1584, Petru Cercel built a new, larger building with three levels: basement, ground floor and first floor. The ground floor of the new 10-room building housed the Royal Chancellery and the rooms attached to it. The first floor, separate from the ground floor, served as bedrooms for the royal family. Access to these rooms was via an external staircase placed on the west facade. A corridor linked the palace to the Great Church. Matei Basarab, the royal palace is experiencing a new period of restoration and transformation. He made a connecting corridor that connected the two buildings and built a partial storey on the old wing.
Unfortunately, the palace was severely affected by the events of 1559-1560, when Prince Gheorghe Ghica, under Ottoman pressure, demolished the fortifications and, in part, the palace.
Constantin Brâncoveanu renovated the palace, adding paintings and stucco to the rooms, a lodge with a staircase leading to the garden on the east facade of Petru Cercel's palace, and another lodge with access to the Great Church on the west side.
Then, after the earthquake of 1803 and the fire of the same year, the old royal court becomes a ruin.
