Wakkanai City, Hokkaido

Wakkanai is currently the northernmost tip of Japan.

However, until the end of World War II, the island further north of Hokkaido, south from latitude 50° N of Karafuto (now Sakhalin, Russia), was also a territory of Japan. A ferry was in service between Wakkanai and Karafuto Odomari Port (now Korsakov).

We can see the shadow of Sakhalin from Cape Soya, the northernmost tip of Japan.

This long corridor was built for the passengers of the ferry at the time to walk unaffected by the sea breeze.
