Saturdays in south Jersey used to be quite a treat when the Southern Railroad of New Jersey (SRNJ) ran the Salem branch. Finding myself stuck in a Monday through Friday life in those years any shortline moving on a weekend was a welcome move.
The Salem branch was always an adventure for fans, and more so, the crew, because you never knew if the train would stay on the rails on any particular run. The power was quite eclectic, with a GP9 leading an old Providence & Worcester U18B on Type B trucks, and an ex-BLE F7 that some of you might recognize as something that has rotted on the Reading & Northern the past several years that will now apparently become a display unit in Temple, PA.
But this day, the odd trio has the freight slowly swaying through Acton, NJ on the way to Salem. This one did derail while switching at Mannington Mills when they got to Salem. Just another day for them at the time.
