The terrible 2's :). Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabiltation Centre

A two year old giraffe photographed at the entrance to Moholoholo.

This young orphaned female was free to wander among a largely captivated audience. It was a treat to be in proximity to such an extraordinary animal, albeit whilst maintaining some distance and keeping an eye on the hooves (as per staff advice).

Despite her size, the young giraffe had a knack for sneaking up to those not mindful of her presence :). The novelty of her impressive height did not wear off for the duration of the encounter.

The Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre does important rehabilitation and education work. Many species of animals have been rescued and successfully treated / rehabilitated for release to the wild since it was established. The centre also cares for orphaned young. Many of Moholoholo's cases are the result of poisoning or hunting (e.g. trapping, etc).

Where release of treated animals is not possible, a number are selected to remain at the centre to act as 'ambassadors.' These ambassadors help to educate locals, the broader community (and tourists) about the importance of conserving animals in their natural habitat.
