L'œuvre d'art a été commandée par le gouvernement des États-Unis et offerte au peuple islandais pour le 1 000e anniversaire de l'Alingi (ou Althing) en 1930. La statue a été dévoilée le 17 juillet 1932 à Reykjavik.
The statue of Norse explorer Leif Erikson atop the memorial to him was created by American artist Alexander Stirling Calder. The work of art was commissioned by the United States government and presented to the Icelandic people for the 1,000th anniversary of the Alingi (or Althing) in 1930. The statue was unveiled on July 17, 1932, in Reykjavik.
