It was built from the 13th to the 15th century, and modified in the 19th. The oldest part is the north tower, which is topped with machicolations. The buildings in the center of the fortress were modified in the 15th century, the period during which the south tower was built. The castle belonged successively to Gilles de Rais (or Retz), Jean V of Brittany, then to the Coétivy, Gondy, Villeroy and Brie-Serrant families before being bought by the local authorities in 1824.
