Wild Waves
Alright! Time to start listing some beautiful new kimono for all of you!
Here's my first offering for this season. It's a gorgeous Early Showa Era Kakeshita (bridal kimono). It likely originates around the 1930's or 40's. This furisode features a bold and beautiful pattern of wild waves, chrysanthemums (kiku), pulownia blossoms (kiri) and phoenixes. Some of the patterns are also accented with delicate gold lame. This piece also has a thickly padded hem for wearing hikizuri style (with the hem trailing), as is the style for bridal kimono. This garment is 100% silk. I believe the outside is chirimen or kinsha silk, while the white lining is likely habbotai. Curiously, this furisode has space for crests to be added, doesn't actually have crests at the moment.
MEASUREMENTS:
165cm - Long (Collar to Hem)
122cm - Arm span
57cm - Width across the back
128cm - Total width of skirt
105cm - Sleeve drop
SIZING:
If you are unsure of how to interpret the kimono's size it is important to know that the length (collar - hem) should be approximately 10cm longer to 10cm shorter than the wearer's overall height (longer is better). This is because the excess length will be folded up at the waist. Meanwhile, the skirt should wrap around the hips a full 1.5 times. The armspan should also reach wrist to wrist on the wearer. In this case, the kimono will ideally fit a woman about 155cm (5'1") - 175cm (5'9") tall, with hips about 85cm (33.5") around. There is some give and take in these measurements though.
