Koharu - Showa Era Geiko Hikizuri

Koharu - Indian Summer

This is a geiko hikizuri I purchased from Ichiroya a while back. Let me tell you this one is such a beauty, unfortunately, she really needs to be appreciated in person. This kimono is rinzu silk (which already has a nice sheen to it). Rinzu usually has patterns woven into the silk and this one has a nice diamond pattern. However, the pattern on this one is woven with very delicate golden threads as well, making the entire kimono shimmer gently like water in the sunlight. It's so lovely!

I believe this kimono is meant to be worn as a piece transitioning from ro silk in the summer, to lined kimono in the fall. This kimono has minimal padding, which I've learned is a characteristic of these transitional kimono. It's got a good deal of summer motifs including grasses, carnations, bush clover and chinese bell flowers. However, the addition of chrysanthemums indicates the arrival of fall. So I named this kimono "Koharu" - "Indian Summer" because she makes me think of the late summer blossoms lingering in the early fall.
