The Battle for Nantymoel
A scan of a slide that I took at Nantymoel terminus in 1991 when National Welsh was starting to teeter sees Bridgend-allocated Leyland Nationals ND412 and N654 in the company of one of the former Scottish Bus Group Nationals that Burrows of Ogmore Vale had purchased for is competing service to Bridgend.
National Welsh's Bridgend depot closed in February 1992 leaving Burrows with the Nantymoel service and rubbing shoulders with Badgerline-owned Brewers, with whom good working relationships were established.
Burrows sold the goodwill of the service and its Leyland Nationals to Brewers the following year, with Brewers outstationing three vehicles (by then Leyland Lynxes) at Burrows' Ogmore Vale premises to maintain local employment.
And these days everything is in the hands of First Cymru with a fleet of Wright StreetLites.
N654, which had the notoriety of being the last Mark I Leyland National delivered to National Welsh (as N4079), went on to operate for Filers of Ilfracombe and Brylaine of Boston, Lincolnshire.
