A Ride Over Hell Gate Bridge -- 4 Photos
The New Haven mainline coming down from Boston goes to Grand Central Terminal. At New Rochelle, NY the line to Penn Station splits off. On the way it encounters Hell Gate, a narrow tidal strait in the East River in New York City in the US. It separates Astoria, Queens from Randall's and Wards Islands.* In order for Amtrak trains from northeast of NYC to get to Penn Station, they have to cross Hell Gate and do so on a massive bridge with long ramps up and down.
On January 23, 1977 I was at the back window of the last car of the southbound Montrealer and shot photos of the crossing.
