Arizona - Grand Canyon: Hermits Rest is a structure built in 1914 at the western end of Hermit Road @ South Rim
The limestone "Hermits Rest" building was erected by Mary Elisabeth Jane Colter in memory of Louis D. Boucher, a French-Canadian hermit who settled at the canyon in 1891 as the first white settler and operated a copper mine before moving on to Utah in 1912. Accordingly, the design of the stone building is based on the accommodation of a lonely mountain dweller.
The road built by the Santa Fe Railroad to Hermits Rest opened this area to mass tourism in 1912, virtually driving out Boucher, who lived alone.
