Coach House Museum, Fielding. The cart to the right is a spring cart which was probably the most versatile of all horse-drawn vehicles. It was used for farm work, taking people to Church, children to school, to town for their monthly supplies and animals to the abattoirs, sale yards and milk or cream to the factory or local creamery. The saddles were solid in construction - sufficient to carry the heavy leather and adjustable belly strap that the tugs were attached to. The tugs carried the shafts of the spring cart. The saddle itself was tied securely to the horse's back by a heavy girth strap. It was stopped from moving forward by a crupper or britching or both.
