Fibres and Filaments

Gouache, yarn, tights, thread, wool, cotton. 59.4cm x 84.1cm.

My aim was to create circular shapes out of manipulated linear fibres. I investigated dipping fibres in wax, tearing, combining and wrapping fibres to investigate different qualities before wrapping them into circular shapes. I used these shapes to create design ideas on the body and also on the face. The resulting effects reminded me of black holes and whirlpools. The colour schemes created are derived from the pieces of fabric I have utilised. I then decided to investigate this wrapping in 3D and experimented with tights on a model’s head. The effect was quite dark and reminiscent of bandaging.
