Contudo, as limitações do terreno assim o obrigaram.

Forte de Santa Catarina, located in Largo Breakwater (Avenue of Spain) is a property of public interest (Decree No. 44 075, DG 281, December 5, 1961).

Built atop a small hill north of the mouth of the river Mondego, the military construction is the card for those who arrive in the city of Figueira da Foz

Given its nature and situation and the military value of the position, it is likely that the site had existed a Lusitanian, sheltering the small town at sea.

It ignores its history in relation to previous seasons to build nationhood, advancing with the hypothesis that the fortress Lusitanian successively restored, had resisted Roman domination and later times, thereby playing the role of defense and watchman.

It is the only fortification of the inlet Buarcos which retains a core closed.

Unfolded in two important tasks: first, defended the entrance to the Mondego, on the other, formed part, with the barns and the Fort of Fort St. Peter Salt marshes, the defensive line of the cove.

Obsolete relic military bastion system, with the unmistakable stamp of moth Vauban, was sent to conclude by D. John IV for the defense bar.

Plant triangular, has a half north of the angle bastion, taking each other a bastion at the apex of the faces cut in the shape of dovetail.

This fortification was not recommended by most of the treatise, as it originated from an angle too acute in the faces of the bastion. However, the limitations of the land so bound.

In 1602, the villages of Figueira da Foz and Buarcos were attacked by English pirates, which greatly damaged the structures of the fortresses. That was when the fort was refurbished and has been attributed to him as abaluartada that still holds today.

Also during the seventeenth century, specifically 1640, the fort of Santa Catarina was the target of a new restoration, by order of D. John IV, was built a large battery, which included 15 pieces of artillery, to defend the bar of the Mondego of possible attacks.

After brilliant performance against piracy which attacked this coastline easy landing, was the Fort of Santa Catarina stage on June 27, 1808, a patriotic action, perhaps decisive for the failure of the rush of Junot, first during the Napoleonic invasion .

Within this strong there is still a chapel known as the chapel of St. Catherine, with a graceful image of the patron saint of the eighteenth century.
