Interesting Rock Formation

I am not sure what causes these strange hexagonal rock shapes. I had never seen them in person before. It was definitely worth the hike down, despite the fog and wet rocks. My new hiking boots held up excellently, though I did slip once and managed to get a rather sizable bruise for my efforts.

UPDATE: I know nothing about geology, but, after a little research, I have learned a few basic things about basalt columns. Columnar Basalt is the result of cooling and cracking of an unusually thick basaltic lava flow. The size of the columns is determined by the speed of the drying lava front.
