Kingscote Hope Cottage Museum / Cape Willoughby original Lantern House and Light Assembly now at Hope Cottage Museum, Kangaroo Island South Australia

Cape Willoughby Lantern House and Light Assembly previously at the present Cape Willoughby Lighthouse.

This lantern house and light assembly was erected in retirement on its present tower after a century of use guarding South Australia’s coastline.

The light and its housing was proving to be too heavy (about 7 tons) for the old lighthouse and it was decided to replace it with lighter equipment.

It is now to be found in the grounds of Hope Cottage Museum.

It was first installed on Tiparra Reef in Spencer Gulf and in 1923 removed by ketch to Cape Willoughby, Kangaroo Island.

Reconstructed by the National Trust July 1976.
