Office building of the Petersburg [Peterborough] Municipal Electric Supply Dept Power Station, Flinders Ranges South Australia
The power station was built by C R Grimes and E J Wall with a foundation stone laid by Governor of South Australia Sir Day Hort Bosanquet GCVO, KCB, on 13 June 1913. C B Lincolne and J K Mac Dougall were Consulting Engineers. Mayor: John C Todd. Town Clerk: S Kealley.
The station was only viable in a small town like Peterborough because the railways agreed to buy a certain amount of the power generated.
Electric light was turned on for the first time on 16 February 1914 and by the end of the year 300 private customers were connected.
The station was converted from direct to alternating current in 1951. In 1972, the station was converted to enable it to run on natural gas from Moomba. It is no longer operational.
