A package of improvements will take place across Phase 4 alongside electrification, such as raising line speeds and removing hazards such as level crossings.
Bolton station will have Platform 5 reinstated. It will be at the extreme western side of the station complex and will enable trains heading from Manchester towards Lostock to overtake, considerably enhancing capacity.
It is currently used in part as a car park and in part not at all.
The walk to the car park rewards the eye. The awning is in fine nick, making the prospect of trains all the more appealing. Trinity Church stands on the skyline. A Northern Class 150 stands at Platform 4 to the right of shot.
