Durant un quart de siècle, Pedralva fut de plus en plus déserté par sa population. En 2006, il ne restait plus que neuf de sa centaine d'habitants et la plupart de ses maisons étaient dans un état de délabrement avancé. Seulement neuf d'entre elles se présentaient dans un état décent et à peine propres à être occupées. La majeure partie des habitations du hameau a été convertie en cottages de location..
Voilà un exemple exceptionnel d'écotourisme.
«In Pedralva, mobile phone access is limited to two square metres in the middle of the village; wifi is only available in the reception/restaurant/café and lounge area – but not in the cottages. Nor is there TV, so guests have time to relax and chat with each other. They can have a dinner without constantly being interrupted by text messages or phone calls, and children will soon discover that there is life beyond TVs, Playstations and iPads. For years, my job had been to encourage people to buy products that they didn’t really need. In Pedralva, the idea is to leave the material world behind to a large extent, and opt for a much simpler experience – quality time, comfort, good food, good friends and interesting conversations.»
