M's Profile

~ Amas Veritas ~

Fireflies and twinkle lights; thunderstorms and full moons; crystal blue skies and rain showers; sunshine and starlight; coffeeshops and neighborhood taverns; front porches and back decks; bookstores and . . . bookstores (or record shops). The occasional acting/playwriting workshop or yoga/tai chi class. Dreaming of traveling by train across Europe. Adore film noir, but trying every day to live Life out loud and in Technicolor.

Remember that girl in your class: quiet, a little quirky, kinda cute, clever, funny; drama club, honor society, literary magazine? That would be me. Very EveryGirl. A Sixteen Candles/Pretty in Pink Molly Ringwald doppelganger (with a twist). But let me be clear: I would have chosen Duckie. I think. No, definitely Duckie. No contest. And, yes, you may admire me. ;-)

So now I'm that woman at the poetry reading, who sometimes, when she's feeling brave, steps up to the mic herself. The woman taking her 5-year-old nephew and goddaughter to see a stage production of Peter Pan as a birthday gift to herself because she's an old soul who still believes in magic. Or the woman in the bookstore cafe, sipping a decaf, writing in her notebook, flipping through the pages of Yoga Journal, Poets & Writers, or the books she's piled on her table: a travel guide to Spain, a book on writing, a new novel. I look up when someone stops for a moment to say "Hey, Doc."

I am a professor, a poet/writer, an aunt, a godmother, a daughter and a sister, close to, committed to my family. I wake up: "Thanks be for the day; Blessed be the day for me and mine." I meditate/journal. Go for a walk. Hold office hours, see students, teach, go to faculty meetings. I have dinner with friends, go to a reading or to see an independent film. I plan my next trip abroad, beat out a rhythm on my drum, read, order Chinese takeout. I call my family. Listen to music, go outside, breathe in the night air, gaze up at the stars and the moon. And sometimes I dance.
