Botanist Étienne Pierre Ventenat first described the golden everlasting as Xeranthemum bracteatum in1803.
The Latin species name bracteatum refers to the papery bracts.
Known more recently as Helichrysum bracteatum before being transferred to the new genus Xerochrysum in 1990.
X. bracteatum was being cultivated in England by 1791.
German horticulturist Herren Ebritsch bred and sold cultivars of many colors including bronze, white and purple at his nursery at Arnstadt near Erfurt in Germany.
These cultivars were to spread across Europe in the 1850s and were noted as being in Australian cultivation by the 1860's .
