Captain Solar Volume 1, Issue #15: Architect's Rule, Part Two: Wishful Thinking

As I enter the building, I'm overwhelmed by this smell. One of sage being burned or something, but also of scented candles. I'm not sure where the smell's coming from, as I don't immediately see any candles. I try to brush it off, as I walk through the worn down room. I see Devyn McAllister sitting behind her desk, looking at various papers. She's approximately in her late 20s, early 30s, if I had to guess. What I can see of her face just looks like she's gone on for days without sleep. I kind of feel bad for coming in now, but the sign did say open.

"Hi... Devyn McAllister?" She finally notices I'm there, and looks up at me.

"Yeah that's me. Who are you supposed to be exactly?" She says in response, while she scans me from head to toe. Guess I should've seen this coming, as the heroes of ARCHON are the only heroes that are household names to the people of Cardinal City.

"Oh me? I'm Captain Solar! Protector of the innocent!" I announce in my most stereotypical hero voice.

"Right.. Is there something you need from me, cause otherwise, you're just wasting your time."

"Do you treat all of your potential clients this way? Kind of seems like it would be bad for business."

"Well sorry 'Captain Solar', but I just like cutting to the chase. Doesn't help that life's been especially cruel lately." She says, mocking my choice of a superhero name.

"Yeah, well, this city has a habit of being cruel to good people. But since you don't seem interested in chatting so much, I'll get straight to the point. I need to find someone called 'Architect'. I was told that you are pretty good at finding people."

"Anything else?"

"Uhh, not really?! It's not I've seen Architect in person or anything, just heard the name through conversation."

"Oh, well that's just great. You do realize that my clients give me more to work off than just a name right? It also doesn't help that there are millions of people literally called architects throughout the world. But sure, I'll just go find my magic wand and bippity boppity boo, the wild Architect appears out of thin air. This is even assuming this Architect is a real person, and not complete nonsense" Way to not hold back at all.

"So you won't take me on as a client then?" My expression fades from excitement, to disappointment just like that.

"I didn't say that... I'm just saying don't get your hopes up too high. With a lack of information though, the price goes up, and it'll take longer for me to investigate. Anyways, here's my service rate." When she finishes talking, she grabs a scrap of paper, and starts writing on it. After a few seconds, she hands it over to me, and my jaw drops. That's definitely more than I was expecting.

"Woahh okay.. Do you take cheques?

"So long as I get paid, it doesn't really matter to me. Not sure how a kid like you has this much money, but I'm not going to complain about it. Small suggestion though, you probably should pay in cash, leaves no paper trail that way. Less risk for whoever you are behind that scrap metal you call a costume."

"Not a fan of the shade you're throwing at me, but you're right about the cash thing. I'm still getting used to this whole hero thing. I'll be back in a few days with the cash then."

"Yea alright. My work hours are on the door. If I'm not here, call my cell, and I'll get back to you when I can." Just before I'm about to ask what her number is, she hands me her business card. Wow, who knew it was this easy to get a girls number. All it takes is for me to go in as a superhero! Ah, who am I kidding? Devyn only gave me her number so that she can get paid, and Dusk's with Dawn. Not that I care anyway, as I only have feelings for one girl. I'm only seen as a friend in her eyes though, nothing more. Ugh, enough with this internal monologue I'm having, I should get home, as after all, it's a school night. Also, I'm pretty sure I haven't been home for at least a day. So my parents are probably freaking out right about now. Oh boy, how am I gonna get out of this one? Honestly, I have no clue, but I better work out something fast.
