A Small Gathering of Friends
The King Penguin is the second largest penguin after the Emperor. They stand about three feet tall, weigh an average of about 30 pounds, and love to congregate in large groups like this. They live in the northern portions of Antarctica as well as the sub-antarctic islands.
This picture was taken on the Falkland Islands at Volunteer Beach where large colonies of King, Gentoo and Magellanic Penguins live. They seem to have no fear of humans, and it is easy to walk among them. They seemed to regard us as just big funny-looking penguins.
There has been a long running dispute between Great Britain and Argentina, which calls the islands the Malvinas, over ownership of the islands, but the penguins don't care.
