Watching Winter Fly By

Surprisingly Winter is a particularly good time to visit the Chicago Botanic Garden. True, all of the plants and flowers are pruned back or lying dormant under a frosty blanket of snow. But a snowfall transforms the landscape into a true Winter wonderland. I enjoy exploring the garden in Winter, looking for the patterns and smooth simplicity that only a Winter snow can create. On this expedition I visited one of my favorite spots, a vantage point across the lake form an unreachable island, which is part of the Japanese garden. The quiet solitude, the pristine snow and the order of the distant island create a sense of serenity and peace. As I was soaking in the scene before me a large flock of geese swept across the sky in a giant formation. I quickly grabbed my camera and lifted it to my eye just as the formation sailed over the island. A click of the shutter and then they were gone and the silent stillness returned.
