St. Bega's Church - Bassenthwaite Lake.
Difficult to understand given the location and history of this church but not a listed building.
One of the few Cumbrian churches to survive the Great Schism of 1064 when East and West went their separate ways.
The fabric of the building suggests a founding date of 950 but could be much earlier. Those pesky Victorians got their hands on the building in 1874 and "improved " the place.
It was on a walk along the lake shore that Tennyson was inspired to create the image of the damask clad arm reaching out of the water to catch the flung sword in Morte D'Arthur. Melvyn Bragg used this location in his rather wonderful book Credo.
Not an easy church to get to but still has regular services and is a popular place to tie the knot.
