Witch Trials of Early Modern Times
With the beginning of the early modern period also in Dillingen and around the witch mania spread out, which especially in the years between 1570-1634 strongly raged. Especially the ducal Lorraine senior judge Nicholas Remigius at the extermination of the alleged witches and devil worshipers gained sad notoriety. The most extensive process in Dillingen was conducted in 1603. Within the process, there was a veritable wave of denunciations (Denuziationswelle) of alleged complicity of the three accused women and of a more and more increasing fantasy portrayal of the supposedly applied damage spell. The process ended with the execution of the accused.
The witch trials of Nalbacher valley, to which belonged Diefflen, were conducted in Dillingen, the executions but then in Nalbach enforced (1575 and 1591/1592 several persons of Nalbacher valley/unknown outcome of the case, in 1595, a man from Diefflen, 1595 a woman from Piesbach, 1602, a man from Körprich, about 1605 each a man from Piesbach and Körprich, 1609, a man from Diefflen, who is alleged to have had sexual activity with his horse and therefore also was executed along with his horse, in 1611 a man and a woman from Körprich/unknown outcome of the case as well as several allegations in the years 1602 and 1611). The enforcement of the executions (burning alive) each were carried out by a hangman (Nachrichter) from Roden.
