I'm assuming this is a bit of Badger Business, given the size of the main hole at the top there. Either that or it's home to a Black Bear or something equally hefty.
Badger holes tend to be semi circular, or rather a capital D shape lying on its flat side, so if you ever need to cram a Badger through a hole, that's the shape to look for.
This didn't have that though, but still, it's a big hole and in fact, it divides into two tunnels just inside, a Y shape junction. I couldn't see if either or both continued or one was a dead end like lower down.
Whatever the beast was, he or she had a couple of tries first before settling for excavating the big hole higher up the bank here.
This is right beside a country lane though, amid a couple of farms near where I've found dead Badgers lying in the road in the past. Whatever it is has dug in a very visible place unfortunately.
