Currently on the Epping & Ongar railway, when built at Loughborough in 1959 D5557 was allocated to Ipswich shed.
Original BR TOPS number 31 139, was applied in 1973 and after a general over haul in 1984 it re- entered service as a Class 31/4 No.31 148, also serving BR for a short time as 31 538 on infrastructure work.
