brook trout male in Driftless Region IA 653A1111
This male brook trout recently completed his rigorous fall spawning duties as seen here by his rather gaunt lean look since the vital spawning ritual consumed all his time and energy for a few frenetic weeks. Now he's famished and ready to find as much food as possible before winter's cold weather slows him down. His ancestors have been living and reproducing here in the Driftless Region since the Pleistocene Period and it's a real special treat to see this cycle continue in a few select pristine streams.
