This is the toucan species sometimes portrayed in advertising (the former Guinness advert), cartoons etc. The outsize, fearsome-looking bill is in fact extremely light; it is made of keratin. Its function is poorly known. It may play a part in courtship rituals; it certainly enables the bird to reach more distant fruit in trees. A widespread species in cerrado-like habitats in South America, mainly in Brazil.
