Baconsthorpe Castle - from the outer gatehouse
A fifteenth-century mansion surrounded by a moat, built for the Heydon family (but not their main residence). The castle was expanded in the later sixteenth century with an outer gatehouse beyond the moat but declined in importance along with the Heydon family's fortunes. Seized in the Civil War, it was bought back by the family then largely demolished for the value of its building materials.
