Runnymede - Air Forces Memorial
Ionic capital in the cloister.
The Air Forces Memorial stands on the hillside overlooking the river and watermeadows at Runnymede. It remembers the members of the Commonwealth's air forces who were killed during World War Two and whose graves are unknown.
The building was designed by Sir Edward Maufe and opened in 1953. It takes the form of a square cloister with a triple-arched portico on one side leading to a tall shrine opposite looking out over Runnymede. The walls of the cloister carry the names of the dead and the coats of arms of the Commonwealth countries are painted in ceiling panels above.
