Interviews with the freed slaves reveal that forced conversions to Islam, beatings, death threats and racial insults were commonplace during their time in captivity. Nine of the slaves reported that they had been raped by their masters. The slaves were all from non-Muslim families at the time of their enslavement: 78 were Christians, while 172 worshipped tribal gods.
