Late night local

A local branch line freight sits fully assembled on a siding in the yard in front of the passenger depot, awaiting orders to depart on its run, delivering a few loads to lineside businesses overnight, when traffic is light.

This pretty scene was created at New Hampshire's Conway Scenic Railroad during a 2008 photo shoot organized by Historic Transport Preservation (HTP) and led by John Craft and Jim Gunning. Featured here is the railroad's 1921-vintage, ex-Canadian National Switcher #7470 and a string of vintage (and geographically appropriate) freight cars. The setting is the old Boston & Maine depot in North Conway, which was built in 1874. For this event, the locomotive's handrails and tires, which are normally white, were blackened to match the look that the engine sported in actual service. The tender logo was also re-lettered for the Canadian National Railway. A long-time viewer of my photos informed me some years ago that this engine spent its last working years at the CN Mimico Yard in Toronto, ON. He indicated that she never ventured more than 5 miles from that yard in regular service and has likely put on a lot more road miles in New Hampshire than she ever did in Canada.
