St Andrew’s Collegiate Chapel, ex-Philadelphia Divinity School
Opened in 1857, Philadelphia Divinity School was an Episcopal (Anglican) theological college (seminary) of Evangelical turned liberal churchmanship. This marvellous set of Gothic buildings was built in the 1920s (a designated architectural landmark so it can't be torn down). It closed in 1973, merging with the theological college in Cambridge, Mass. to form the Episcopal Divinity School. The University of Pennsylvania, a very secular school, owns this now. Nobody can afford the rent so the church is empty. An infant school rents some of the rest of the buildings: they open up the church for a plant sale once a year. Inside there is still a stone altar, wooden ceiling with saints painted on it, some gilded choir stalls, and galleries for the pulpit and choir (and where the organ used to be). S. Clement’s Yarnall Library of Theology used to be here; now it’s in Penn’s library. The grounds were a popular dog park until the university and the city built a primary school here, next to these buildings.
