Camille

This card features a colorized version of the Flammarion engraving, which is a wood engraving by an unknown artist. It originally appeared in L’atmosphere: meteorologie populaire (“The Atmosphere: Popular Meteorology”) by Nicolas Camille Flammarion in 1888.

The engraving depicts a medieval pilgrim crawling under a gap where the starry sky meets the earth and looking into the mysterious heavens beyond. It is a representation of a medieval cosmology that included a flat earth crowned by a hemispherical and immpenetrable sky.
