Steam heating plant served entire complex, with room controls consisting of Pneumatic modulating thermostats and pneumatic radiator control valves. Boilers were sequenced on demand, and boiler burners were full modulation. The Kewanee steam boilers maintained good efficiency between 20% and 80% firing rates. Firing rates were based on steam (total heating) demand. Return system was vacuum return for maximum efficiency and proper and even heat distribution.
All these systems were left to malfunction but remained easily serviceable. But the choice was made to let them run badly causing overheating of some areas, freezing of others, and terrible efficiency and noisy operation. Ruptured boiler tubes in view expose this neglect. These boilers could easily have been retubed for another 20 years of service.
This neglect may have been intentional to "sell" a new school to those unfamiliar with these heating systems.
