Here are some photos from an afternoon of watching trains.
I started in Roseville, California, where a track test car and some Jordan spreaders were parked, then headed north to Wheatland, a small town south of Marysville.
At Wheatland, I got photos of some buildings, but no trains came by, so I continued north and finally saw a southbound manifest stopped in Ostrom siding. It had died on the hours of service law and a Renzenberger crew van was collecting the crew, but had not brought a relief crew, so the train would be there for a while. Another southbound train ran around it, then I took some photos of the SP searchlight signals at the south end of the siding.
In Marysville, the dogs and I spent some time at Binney Jct. where the former Western Pacific east-west main line and the former Southern Pacific north-south line cross. Today, both lines are UP and trains regularly switch from one to the other. While we were there, the northbound ZLCBR (priority intermodal, LA to Portland, Oregon) came through on the ex-SP Valley Sub, then a BNSF southbound on the ex-WP Sacramento Sub and a UP southbound on the Valley Sub arrived about the same time, with the dispatcher giving the UP train the crossing first, followed by the BNSF train. The last train we saw at Binney Jct. was a UP stack train that had come down the Feather River Canyon on the former WP and turned south onto the former SP.
The day was warm and the dogs were getting tired, so we left after that. At Sunset-Whitney, just north of Roseville, we caught up to the stack train, and watched it meet a northbound manifest that was in the siding.
Not a bad day's haul of photos.
