Salt Lake City & Ogden, 2 July 2009

In July 2009, Union Pacific did some track work on the Moffat Tunnel line, which required Amtrak to reroute the California Zephyr through Wyoming on UP's Sherman Hill and Echo Canyon route. This line has been freight only since the Amtrak's Pioneer came off in 1997.

Daughter Caroline and I rode the Zephyr to Denver at the end of June, going east on the Moffat line. We spent a day in Denver, then rode west through Wyoming on 1 July. We arrived in Salt Lake City several hours early and checked into a hotel for the night.

On 2 July, we played tourist in Salt Lake City and Ogden. While Caroline slept in, I went out in the morning and photographed Front Runner, the UP station and UTA light rail trains, then picked up Caroline and we rode Front Runner to Ogden and checked out the museum at Odgen Union Station, Going north, we rode the railfan seat of the lead coach, getting an engineer's eye view of the line.

The Ogden museum has displays about railroading and its history in the Ogden area as well as antique cars and a section devoted to the firearms of John Moses Browning, who was from Ogden.

After returning to Salt Lake City, we rode the UTA light rail system to the university and checked out the views of the city and Salt Lake Valley before heading back to the Amtrak station.

I remember us eating at a Japanese restaurant up the street from Ogden Union Station. Caroline has long been interested in Japan, an interest sparked originally by manga and anime and we were pleasantly surprised to to find a Japanese restaurant when we went looking for a place to eat.
