Western Railway Museum, Rio Vista Jct and Suisun, 29 Oct 2016

We had a Calrailfans mini-meet at the Western Railway Museum at Rio Vista Jct., California on 29 Oct. Mini as in 2 of us were there.

The WRM was running its pumpkin trains to Gum Grove, a few miles down the former Sacramento Northern from the main museum at Rio Vista Jct. Key System cars were used, and I rode both of their bridge units, although they also had been using streetcar 352 earlier.

After checking out the museum and enjoying the train ride and Halloween events, I drove to Garfield, the Little Honker Bay Road crossing and photographed both bridge units passing through the fields, which are turning green after our recent rain. By the time the bridge units were built, the Key System was one of America's most urban interurban lines, and to someone who knows that they had spent their regular in service lives running across the Bay Bridge between San Francisco and the East Bay cities, they looked a bit out of place in the open spaces of Solano County. Then again, their regular service lives were about 2 decades before the Key System folded and the tracks were removed from the Bay Bridge. They have been at Rio Vista Jct. since the 1960s.

After getting the photos at Garfield, I stopped by the Amtrak Suisun-Fairfield station and happened to see Capitol train 743. It had been years since I'd been to Suisun-Fairfileld station, other than passing through on the train. Nearby is Cordelia Jct., where the line to Napa and the Northwestern Pacific connection at Schellville connects with the current UP main line. I shot a couple of SD70Ms and an ancient wooden passenger car that has been part of a track shed for decades, and is slowly falling apart.
