Gunkanjima is an island located in Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture.
From the Meiji era to the Showa era, it prospered by submarine coal mines, and Japan's first high-rise apartment building made of reinforced concrete was built. In the 1960s, it had a population density higher than that of Tokyo. It has been an uninhabited island since the islanders left the island due to the closure of the mountain in 1974 (Showa 49).
