Demonstration plot showing pre-restoration conditions. Decades of fire suppression increased hardwood basal area and decreased understory plant diversity and wildlife habitat.

In April 2016 the Ouachita National Forest in partnership with the Oak Woodlands and Forests Fire Consortium and the Southern Fire Exchange hosted a field tour of the shortleaf pine-bluestem restoration project area in the Ouachita National Forest in western Arkansas. The field tour explored sites within a 155,000 acre project area that has demonstrated and documented through research the successful reintroduction of prescribed fire for managing shortleaf pine-bluestem ecosystems.
