A cattle egret overflies a field in search of prey on a rainy overcast day. These large, white birds, described as elegant by many birders, have thrived and are now considered pests in the islands. The cattle egret was introduced to Hawaii from Africa to reduce flies and other ectoparasites on ranch cattle. Besides invertebrates, they eat just about anything, including the nestlings of other birds.
