A cattle egret in breeding plumage searches the turf for insect prey. Native to Africa, the cattle egret was introduced to Hawaii to reduce flies and ectoparasites on ranch cattle. These large, white birds, described as elegant by many birders, have thrived and are now considered invasive pests in the islands. Besides invertebrates, they eat just about anything, including the nestlings of other birds.
