Amazona

Gaudy color and a harsh, loud, squawking call make this red-crowned parrot (Amazona viridigenalis) hard to miss. Originally from Mexico, a few escaped or released birds have become a large, established pandemonium on Oahu. Intelligent, gregarious, and long-lived, they are also a threat to agriculture and a vector of avian diseases. This male was one of the first to take morning flight from a roost of several dozen along ‘Aiea Stream.
