Ready To Spar
The natural behavior for all Whitetail Bucks (Odocoileus virginianus) is to establish a hierarchy in dominance. One of the main purposes of White-tailed deer antlers is to attract female deer for mating. During mating season (rut) Bucks display their antlers to does and use them to become the dominant male. The bucks will spar with each other using their antlers to establish dominance to claim females. Buck sparring starts as soon as the antlers have shed their velvet and become hard. However, most fighting/sparring before rut is each buck testing one another and sharpening their fighting skills in preparation for the fight for dominance. It may look like a shoving match early in rut, or it can look like a serious antler grudge match the closer to full rut they get. If a younger or smaller buck is beaten in a battle, then he will most likely not become a dominant buck for another year or two and possibly never. During this time, he will move to areas avoiding conformations with the dominant buck. These two young bucks get ready to spar during the Texas pre-rut. They were photographed near Fredericksburg in the Texas Hill Country.
