Bee Head

Check out those segmented antennae, compound eye, and fuzz!

This bee was imaged using an electron micrscope, after being sputter coated with a very fine layer of gold. She was infected with Deformed Wing Virus, a common bee virus transmitted by Varroa destructor, or varroa mites. Infected bees often have wing deformities which prevent them from flying, and will wander away from the hive to die. This particular bee is from my hive in West Oakland, CA. She's a bit smaller than most domesticated bees because she was raised in small cell comb.
